I started Learning Essentials six years ago with a vision in mind. Not only did I want to help students attain their academic goals, but, more importantly, I wanted students to learn study habits that would assist them in maintaining, if not exceeding their goals. Solid learning strategies are the key to a student’s future achievements.
I began tutoring students while at Frostburg State University, where I received a B.S. in Social Science/Secondary Education. From the very start, it became apparent to me that quality tutoring involved more than just assisting students in their work; I realized that study habits had to be improved and learning strategies needed to be taught. Over the years, I have found that many students are capable of success both in and out of the classroom, but they often are missing the strategies on how to achieve success. It is from this vision and experience that Learning Essentials has become what it is today: a reliable new way of tutoring that ensures success to all students. Now that I am a mom myself, I can understand even more a parent’s desire to give their child every opportunity to not only succeed, but to thrive as a life-long learner.
I started this venture on my own, but overtime, I have pulled together a team of highly qualified, gifted tutors that share in my passion for teaching students how to learn and how to approach learning. We believe that education is empowering and that nothing gives a student of any age more confidence than learning how to learn. Our tutors love to teach and are committed to helping students enjoy and understand the process of learning. I am confident that, when given the chance,we can meet and exceed your expectations. Researched Based Methods
Learning Essentials specializes in using research based methods for all grades. Not only do we build great writers, confident readers, and inquisitive mathematicians but we also build self-esteem in each and every one of our students. Our program uses the Strategic Instruction Model (SIM), developed by researchers and teachers at the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning (KU-CRL). SIM is an approach to teaching students who struggle with becoming good readers, writers, and learners. In addition, we utilize several other research-proven programs such as: Handwriting Without Tears, Lindamood Bell, WILSON Reading System, and Breaking the Code. The programs we infuse in our tutoring are based on the reality that for students to meet high standards, they must be able to study, read, write and understand large volumes of complex, difficult learning materials. Additionally, they must acquire the skills to express themselves effectively across the academic board.
Special Needs
Our techniques for supporting students with learning disabilities have a remarkable success rate. We begin by defining what a successful outcome is, and design strategies to achieve your desired outcome. From students with reading problems, Executive Functioning, ADD/ADHD, auditory processing problems, and Autism; to those who are formally diagnosed as learning disabled, we will find the right plan for each child.
Differentiated Learning Styles
Whether your child is an auditory, visual, or kinesthetic learner, Learning Essentials will find a strategy that will result in success. Techniques are shared and practiced, so students can achieve success on their own. We also address multiple intelligences and build a foundation on your child’s strengths.
Individualized Attention
We offer a level of attention that most franchise tutoring centers cannot achieve. Learning Essentials offers individualized tutoring.
Reinforcement and Educational Advancement
We offer an opportunity to children to gain greater understanding of subject matter through application of skills. We can build on knowledge that children bring with them into the tutoring environment.
Communication
Learning Essentials works with parents, teachers, and other professionals as requested. We can attend IEP meetings and support classroom instructors. Your child’s progress is continually monitored and shared. We adhere to the strictest standards of confidentiality at all times.
